We are pleased to announce that our Eni i-Sint XEF 0W-20 and Eni i-Sint Tech GMX 5W-30 are now qualified for the API SQ RC and ILSAC GF-7A standards. Licenses were granted following the completion of the API/ILSAC qualification process. The licensing round began in March 2025. We are currently updating our relevant Technical Data Sheets and labels to reflect this upgrade.
The ILSAC GF-7 and API SQ qualification processes are overseen by the American Petroleum Institute (API). The new standards have replaced ILSAC GF-6 and API SP and provide several improvements.
ILSAC GF-7 has been divided into two distinct subcategories: ILSAC GF-7A and ILSAC GF-7B. Both are designed to provide performance improvements over ILSAC GF-6, but there are some key differences:
API SQ-RC is the latest engine oil standard for modern gasoline and hybrid vehicles, prioritising fuel economy and protection, especially in turbocharged engines. It is designed “to provide protection against both fresh and aged oil low-speed pre-ignition (LSPI), improved timing chain wear protection, improved high temperature deposit protection for pistons and turbochargers, sludge and varnish control. API SQ with Resource Conserving (RC) matches ILSAC GF-7A by combining API SQ performance with improved fuel economy, enhanced emission control system protection, enhanced low temperature pumpability and protection of engines operating on ethanol-containing fuels up to E85.” [See API’s motor oil guide]
API SQ oils outperform API SP oils in several key areas, including high-temperature (RC)viscosity and deposit levels, low-temperature engine deposits, and fuel economy. Additionally, API SQ oils have a maximum sulfated ash content limit of 0.9%. This limit is comparable to API SP but lower than that of previous oil generations.
The release of API SQ coincides with the rollout of the ILSAC GF-7 standards. Typically, API and ILSAC standards are closely aligned, and this is also true for API SQ and GF-7. However, API SQ will include ultra-low viscosity grades that are not part of the GF-7 standard. Both GF-7A and API SQ oils will be backwards compatible with vehicles that use GF-6A and API SP oils.
