Follow the four R’s of proper lubrication:
- the right engine oil (right viscosity, additives and specifications for the application)
- right place
- right time
- right amount
- Always use the correct oil type and filter. Check your vehicle’s manual for the recommended oil type (e.g., viscosity) and filter specifications. As an engine oil specialist, Enilive helps you to select the right engine oil for your car. Our online Enilive Lube Finder gives you tailor-made oil advice based on the specifics of your car.
- Warm up the engine first. A common mistake is to drain a cold engine. Typically, oil is thicker when cold. Cold temperatures can cause it to run down slowly and leave dirty oil in the engine. Therefore, it is recommended to drain when the engine is warm. Run the engine for a few minutes to warm up the oil and then proceed to drain. Ensure that your engine is not at operating temperatures (too hot) to avoid burns.
- Prefill the (new) filter with oil. When installing a filter, ensure it is filled with oil. If you start your vehicle with an empty filter, it may take several seconds for the oil pressure to build up enough to circulate oil throughout the engine, as most of it will be directed into the new filter.
- Lubricate the gasket of the filter. This will ensure efficient spinning and proper tightening.
- Avoid overtightening the drain plug and oil filter. Overtightening can damage the threads of the oil pan. Over time, these threads may become completely stripped, which can cause the drain plug to fall off. Therefore, it is recommended to tighten it by hand, and then use a wrench to make a 1/4 turn if needed.
- Avoid overfilling. Excessive oil in the system can lead to high oil pressure, which forces oil past seals and rings, resulting in leaks.
